Tibetan building answers the plateau: thick walls of rammed earth or stone that lean inward as they rise, flat roofs for a dry climate, small windows that widen inside, whitewash against the sun and a band of dark red or brown at the parapet. The same language builds a farmhouse, a fort and the Potala, which is the largest of them all and the palace that Desi Sangye Gyatso completed.
