The bamboo pen is cut with a knife to a flat chisel tip and split at the centre so it holds ink; the width of the tip is the unit of the letter’s proportions. Ink was soot bound with glue, ground on a stone with water. The writing board was a plank of wood coated with chalk, ash or a dark ground, written on with a pointed stylus, and wiped clean for the next line.
