The secular ensemble is small: dranyen, piwang, lingbu and yangchen, sometimes a drum. The monastic orchestra is large and loud, and every instrument in it has a ritual role as well as a musical one. This page will present each instrument with its construction, its playing technique and its repertoire; the dranyen has pages of its own.
