Each year takes an element, wood, fire, earth, iron or water, and an animal, from the mouse to the pig, and the pairs return after sixty years. The cycles are counted from 1027, the year the Kālacakra Tantra reached Tibet, and a Tibetan date names its cycle, its year, its month and its day.
