Mind and Mental Factors

sems dang sems byung

The Abhidharma map of the mind: the primary mind and the fifty-one mental factors that accompany it, from attention and feeling to anger and regret.

This page is a placeholder. It exists so that the structure does; the text will follow, and will be checked by a teacher of the field before it is called finished.

The tradition distinguishes the mind itself, which knows an object, from the mental factors that colour the knowing. The Abhidharma counts fifty-one: the five ever-present factors, feeling, discrimination, intention, contact and attention; the five that fix on an object; the eleven virtuous factors; the root and secondary afflictions; and the four that can go either way. It is a vocabulary for the inner life more precise than most languages possess.

The pages here will present the fifty-one factors in their groups, with their definitions.
