A Tibetan child learns to read by chanting. Each syllable is spelled aloud in a fixed formula, root letter, then subscript, then vowel, then suffix, and the result pronounced at the end, so that the sound is derived from the spelling rather than memorised. The method is called sbyor klog, spelling-reading, and it is why a Tibetan reader can pronounce a word never seen before.
