The Collected Topics begin with colours. White is a colour; is a colour white? From that first exchange the student learns the shape of every later one: a definition, an example, and the consequences that follow if the definition is wrong. The topics climb from colours through established bases, identity and difference, cause and effect, negation, and universals and particulars, and by the end the student has a working vocabulary of philosophical terms and the reflex of testing each one.
