After the Collected Topics comes the study of what a mind does. Every cognition is sorted: direct perception, which apprehends its object without concepts; inference, which reaches an object through a reason; correct assumption, which is right without knowing why; doubt; and wrong view. The sorting matters because only the first two count as knowledge, and the whole of the tradition’s epistemology rests on the difference.
