Gendün Chöphel, in the first half of the twentieth century, wrote in the old forms with a modern mind. Döndrup Gyal, in 1983, wrote Waterfall of Youth in no form at all, and modern Tibetan poetry dates from it. Since then free verse has been written in Tibetan in Lhasa, Xining, Dharamsala and the diaspora, and a generation of poets is at work in it now.
